November was a busy month for aspiring authors! Writers all over the globe are resting their cramped fingers while they celebrate the completion of their manuscripts. What is NaNoWriMo? It is National Novel Writing Month, a non-profit organization that was formed to help motivate writers to finally write that novel they have been planning. The organization provides tools and tips to help members stay on track until the very end. Many local libraries and literary venues have joined in, offering prep workshops and writing games, as well as providing space for writers to work and collaborate with other. So, of course, we decided to join in the fun! The Storyteller's Cottage and The Simsbury Public Library joined forces to help make NaNoWriMo a success for our local writers! Here is what went down....
The Timeframe: November 1st-30th / The Goal: To write 50,000 words.
Starting late October, our staff member and writer, Heather Murray, held a series of prep workshops to help get writers inspired and in full writing mode. She hosted a variety of fun writing games and prompts, from creating mood boards to map out their stories, to learning how to write the perfect ending, as well as guided discussions where fellow writers could share ideas and tips on what inspired them to get their words onto paper.
Once November arrived, the real fun began! Staff members from The Simsbury Public Library came to sit in with us for writing games like word sprints, where they had a certain amount of time set on a stopwatch to see how many words they could write. As the clock ticked counting down the days, and the juices were flowing, they would come to just sit in a quiet, inspirational space and type away.
Writers were splashed all over our Victorian house lying, sitting, standing, sprawled, in whatever position helped them power through.
When the clock hit midnight on November 30th, whether finished or not, NaNoWriMo ended with a clink of cocktail glasses in celebration!

ONE-ON-ON WITH AN AUTHOR
The best way to get real and accurate advice, especially when it comes to the complicated world of publishing, is by "picking the brain" of someone who has been through it all. If you are ready to publish but you are unsure where to start, we offer one-on-one meetings with a local published author, where you can schedule an appointment time to ask the questions that only someone who has been through the process can answer...the right way. This January, Lisa Acerbo will be our featured author. Click HERE to learn more and schedule your appointment!
