Professional editor C. Flanagan Flynn has been named our first Writer-In-Residence, and is available to help all levels of writers with their writing and editing needs.
Stuck on a personal essay, memoir, novel, or blog content? Enlist C's help like countless other writers have. C's expertise in working with fiction and nonfiction writers is evidenced through the bylines they’ve earned working with her. As the former Managing Editor of Brain Child and Brain Teen magazines, C’s editorial roles extend to Founding Editor and Editor-in-Chief of Centered: The magazine of personal stories where six of the personal essays and memoir excerpts are in contention for Pushcart Prizes. With C’s editorial input, writers have published standalone essays, memoir excerpts, or novel excerpts in Creative Nonfiction Magazine, The New York Times (Modern Love Column), The MacGuffin, and Brain Teen. Column). Manuscripts she’s edited have been published by Penguin Random House, New World Library, and Lone Pine Publishing. She’s guided bloggers to syndication, including a writer’s recent partnership with The Good Men Project.
As a writer, C has been twice nominated for Pushcart Prizes and, in 2018, an excerpt of her memoir, A Reunion of Broken Parts, was a finalist for The Frank McCourt Memoir Prize. She’s been published in The New York Times, Memoir Magazine, Brain Child, and Brain Teen.
She also teaches the highly successful Write Your Memoir or Novel and Six Months to Your Manuscript workshops. A seasoned copywriter, C can also help with marketing, advertising, and brand messaging. C’s editorial eye, her ability to help writers finish manuscripts, and her experience with excerpting chapters have proven life-changing for writers.

OPTION 1: Book an Individual Appointment
COST: $75/hr for new clients, $60/hr for previous students.
While the Storyteller's Cottage is closed to slow the spread of Covid-19, C will meet with individual writers via Zoom and follow up by email. Bring your writing project for feedback, describe your obstacles for suggestions, and let C share her expertise as a professional editor to help you polish your work and make it the best it can be. When the Cottage opens again, these appointments will be held during C's weekly office hours on Thursdays between noon and 6pm. Time slots are available in half hour increments (with a required hour minimum). Schedule permitting, C will accommodate walk-ins.
OPTION 2: Arrange a Semi-Private Workshop
COST: $35/hr per student
Groups of 2 - 3 writers may join together to form an intimate online group that is a hybrid between a traditional class and individual instruction. Meet weekly on Zoom to discuss your work underway, receive individualized feedback, and share suggestions.
OPTION 3: Join a Group Class
COST: $250 for 6 weeks of instruction
"Write Your Memoir or Novel" is a popular class that currently meets on Zoom on Thursday nights from 6:00 - 8:00 pm for 6 weeks. If you have a desire to make writing your memoir or novel a priority in 2020, this collaborative workshop will provide you the necessary guidance, structure, and writer’s tools. In this 6-week workshop, you’ll learn how to draw upon your life experiences to write your memoir or to craft fiction from your imagination.
You’ll tackle your writing from all angles—as a reader, writer, editor, and with your eye toward publication. You’ll learn strategies to execute your ideas which will save you time as a writer and serve your story. You’ll write at minimum a chapter a week. Under the guidance of a working editor of two award-winning magazines, you’ll learn how to shape your writing to captivate readers and sustain their interest. We’ll delve into the ever-changing book publishing landscape and the many print and online magazines which could serve as homes for your writing or launch your memoir or novel. Workshop will include writing prompts which work for nonfiction and fiction. Writers of all levels are welcome. Workshop will include one-on-one conferencing to target ways in which you can grow as a writer and produce your highest quality writing. These six weeks will be transformational!
